Secret to a meaningful Christmas

We’re less than two weeks away from Christmas! As I sit next to the radiance of the cozy fireplace and reminisce on all the gifts that have come into my life this past year, I feel oh so thankful for this beautiful life I’ve been given. Not the types of gifts we see under the tree with our names written on a holiday-themed label; I mean the gifts of friendship, opportunity, and growth. A beautiful Christmas isn’t defined by the amount of presents you receive. The secret to a meaningful Christmas is a philanthropic spirit – an innate desire to give abundantly.

I get excited when I see a pretty wrapped present underneath the sparkly Christmas tree with my name on it, but can I tell you how much more fulfillment I get out of these gifts of life experience? Sure, a new cashmere scarf or a gold Porter Lyons X Ring can make my eyes light up. But to see joy on someone else’s face when you choose to get out of your comfort zone and do something a little extra for them can make your heart feel some kind of jolly.

Going the extra mile for someone can be as simple as starting a conversation. Some people just need to know that someone cares enough to listen. Slow down and you’ll find friendships in the most unexpected places. Rather than keeping your attention on your phone while standing in the inconvenient holiday shopping lines, get to know the person behind you. Don’t just complain about the wait time together; ask them what their passions are in life. Take the time to hear a new story and possibly make a precious friend.

Opportunity to serve others is all around us. Spend a day at a soup kitchen and feed the hungry. Donate a coat to someone who isn’t able to sit next to the warmth of a fireplace. Help that elderly woman down the street decorate her home. Get creative and think outside of the box because you never know when your actions will change a life forever.

Building new friendships and taking advantage of opportunities will only allow your character to grow. You won’t find anything better than that wrapped up in a beautiful bow beneath the tree. Let’s allow this holiday season to expand our hearts so that we can better reach into the lives of others.

Cheese and waffles (but not together), and golden sunsets are a few of her favorite things.
